New Breeds Speak Up

Ready for the show after a run.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is the second oldest sporting competition in the USA. This year’s show (February 13 and 14, 2012) at Madison Square Garden will feature six new breeds, all ready to speak up for their patronage.

XOLOITZCUINTLI (Show-low-itz-Quint’-lee): “I’ve been featured on TV’s Animal Planet already! In days past, I used to be called the Mexican Hairless.”

NORWEGIAN LUNDEHUND (Luhn’-dee-hund): “Not so fast, partner! Move over for some real foreign species!”

CESKY Terrier (Chess’-key): “Want to get grounded? Count on me!”

ENTLEBUCHER Mountain Dog (Ent-lee-boo’-kehr): “I can find my way around any mountain, and I’ll find my way around here to the winner’s circle!”

AMERICAN ENGLISH COONHOUND: “This here is my territory to sniff, Entlee!”

FINNISH LAPPHUND (Lap’-hundh): “Yeah? Looks to be like a lotta foreign entries, Americano.”

Twenty-two years ago, The American Kennel Club sported 142 eligible breeds. A new breed must be sponsored by an organized club for its specific breed and have adequate numbers throughout the USA to be eligible for American Kennel Club recognition. This year’s six new breeds raises the total number of recognized and eligible participant breeds to 185. The Bichon Frise represents the fastest rise to fame for all breeds that have taken part in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. In 1974, the Bichon Frise debuted in the famous dog show, and by 2001 the little guy was named Best Of Show.

If you’ve never attended, or watched an official dog show competition, check it out! You’ll be well treated! P.S. The first oldest (annual) sporting competition in the USA is the Kentucky Derby — 1875.
